“Sip”

I take a sip out of a cup of peace

A numbing warmth that spreads to fingertips

Another sip to make all feeling cease

My fingers fumble, tumbling by with ease

They skate by unaware they’ve lost their grip

Yet, I take a sip out of my cup of peace

Imagine walking with cinder block feet

While dragging your eyes up when down they slip

Oh well. Another sip to make it cease

My mind, swimming in sand, looks for water to seize

My mouth has a leak, letting empty words drip

I hide it with sips from my cup of peace

I laugh too loud, too long. My insides squeeze

I almost choke laughing about humorless quips

I need a sip to make the feeling cease

Now more can I tell what my body needs

My tongue interrupts my feet and I trip

I take a sip out of my cup of peace

another sip to make all feeling cease
